Göppingen (dpa / lsw) - Because Janus Smarason injured his shoulder at the Handball World Cup in Egypt, he will be absent from Frisch Auf Göppingen until the end of the season.

The Icelandic international had to have an operation after his premature departure from the World Cup at the end of this week, the Bundesliga team announced on Monday.

Smarason, who had had shoulder problems since the beginning of the season, was only used in the Icelanders' first World Cup game against Portugal (23:25).

"For us, the failure of Janus Smarason is one of the most serious losses that one can imagine," said Göppingen's sporting director Christian Schöne.

Due to the failure, the club is considering a subsequent commitment.
