The Paris Bourse remained on the defensive Monday at mid-session (-0.65%), investors worried about the progression of the Covid-19 pandemic which threatens the economic recovery.

After opening slightly higher, the Paris index widened its losses, yielding 0.65%, or 36.36 points, to 5,523.21 points.

"Investors are torn between hopes of additional monetary aid and the deterioration of the pandemic," writes Pierre Veyret, analyst at ActivTrades.

"This lack of clarity on the short and medium term outlook generally leads to market consolidation."

The only statistic of the day, the German Ifo index, gave a bitter taste of economic activity: the morale of German entrepreneurs deteriorated in January, losing 2.1 points over one month against 0.6 points expected.

In this context, market participants will be attentive to the speech of the President of the ECB, Christine Lagarde, on the first day of the World Economic Forum.

"The restrictive measures against Covid-19 and a sluggish vaccination campaign alter risk appetite", also observes Milan Cutkovic, analyst at Axi.

Crucial meeting of the week, the American Central Bank (Fed) will meet for the first time this year, Tuesday and Wednesday, a week after the arrival at the White House of Joe Biden who presented his emergency program of 1.900 billion dollars to relieve the economy.

"The Fed should leave its monetary policy unchanged but could warn of a slowdown in the economic recovery," said Cutkovic.
