Hanover (dpa / lni) - The Oldenburg regional bishop Thomas Adomeit (50) has been elected as the new council chairman of the Confederation of Protestant Churches in Lower Saxony.

According to an announcement on Monday, he is replacing the Hanoverian regional bishop Ralf Meister, who has been council chairman since 2012.

The Evangelical Lutheran regional churches of Hanover, Braunschweig, Oldenburg and Schaumburg-Lippe and the Evangelical Reformed Church based in Leer work together in the confederation founded in 1971.

The churches jointly represent their interests towards the state of Lower Saxony.

Adomeit called the 50-year-old Confederation a “sustainable network”.

She has also proven herself as the state's contact during the corona pandemic.

"With the common approach and the open doors in state politics, all five churches have found a way to remain as churches with the people entrusted to us," he said.
