Berlin (dpa) - The federal government wants to protect retirement and nursing homes better against infections with the corona virus with more rapid tests and the deployment of thousands of soldiers.

Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) called on the federal states and municipalities to use the Bundeswehr's offers for administrative assistance - especially with a view to intensified tests.

The Bundeswehr is keeping 10,000 additional soldiers ready for this task until the training of civilian helpers via the Federal Employment Agency works.

"These rapid tests can prevent you from being infected with corona," said the CDU politician when visiting a care facility in northwest Berlin.

“For many very old people, this means that it is a matter of life and death.

That means what we're doing with this test is really protecting life. "

According to "Spiegel" information, Kramp-Karrenbauer wants to intensify the Bundeswehr's Corona mission by completely assuming the costs incurred.

Her ministry had prepared a corresponding template for the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

In the draft resolution, the defense department argues that the nationwide deployment of the Bundeswehr, for example in rapid tests in old people's and nursing homes or in vaccination centers, is in the urgent interest of the federal government.

The federal government called on states and municipalities to report a need for assistance in old people's and nursing homes.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert said this is a prerequisite for volunteers to be deployed in a targeted manner.

He announced a hotline that volunteers can contact and then receive training from the Red Cross.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said that a total of around 14,500 soldiers are currently deployed in Corona aid.

Of these, 747 women and men nationwide are active in old people's homes on the basis of 52 administrative assistance applications.

1400 soldiers are planned in the plans.

The number of soldiers deployed could be further increased.

It is noticeable that offers of help are increasingly being accepted.

“That is picking up a little more speed now.

But I can only make an urgent appeal to everyone on site.

Submit the administrative assistance requests.

We are ready to help, ”said Kramp-Karrenbauer.

The Bundeswehr has received around 3,500 applications for administrative assistance so far, of which only 10 percent could not have been fulfilled - because the legal situation did not provide or the Bundeswehr itself did not have enough material.

Kramp-Karrenbauer stated that the Bundeswehr must continue to fulfill its core mission.

She named the missions abroad and as well as the alliance and national defense.
