Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte plans to offer his resignation in a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The government announced on Monday in Rome.

Conte had narrowly won two votes of confidence in parliament last week, but his minority government has been on a shaky footing ever since.

The Reuters news agency quoted an insider, according to whose information Conte President Sergio Mattarella will then ask for a new mandate.

The goal is to set up a stronger government.

The maneuver could save Conte time to solicit more support in parliament.

He no longer has an absolute majority in the Senate, and his government could collapse this week on a vote on the annual report on the judicial system.

The "Corriere della Sera" reported that Conte wanted to bring ex-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, the head of Italia Viva, who had left the government, back on board and try to form a "government of national salvation".

This should also have the support of some moderate MPs from the center-right camp.

In the event of failure, Conte would have to resign.

Presumably someone else would then try to form a new coalition around the governing parties of the 5-Star Movement and the Social Democrats of the Partito Democratico (PD).

The non-party Conte ruled since September 2019 with a coalition of the 5-star movement, PD and three other, smaller parties.

After the smaller partner Italia Viva broke the coalition, Conte asked the vote of confidence at the beginning of last week.

Since then, he has appealed to independent and center senators to join his minority government.

However, only a few responded to this call.

In the fight against the corona virus and the dramatic economic consequences of the pandemic, Conte is aiming for a large majority in parliament in order to be able to implement urgently required measures quickly and easily.
