Sassnitz-Mukran (dpa / mv) - In the port of Mukran on the island of Rügen, ships from the Lürssen shipyard for the Egyptian Navy have been loaded.

The ships built in Wolgast are designed, for example, to protect sensitive offshore facilities, prevent smuggling, curb piracy or for sea rescue, the shipyard said on request.

On Monday two smaller and one larger military ship could be seen on a transport ship in Mukran.

Lürssen could not give any more precise information about the transport.

The shipyard announced at the beginning of November that it had signed a contract with the Egyptian Navy for the delivery of ten coast guard boats manufactured in Wolgast.

They were originally built for Saudi Arabia.

However, the federal government had imposed an arms export ban on Saudi Arabia and recently even extended and tightened it.

The Federal Government justifies the embargo on Saudi Arabia primarily with the participation of the highly armed regional power in the Yemen war.

A complete export ban against Saudi Arabia was imposed in November 2018 after the killing of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was critical of the government, in the Saudi consulate general in Istanbul.
