Potsdam (dpa / bb) - At just under 18 million euros, spending on building new cycle paths in Brandenburg last year reached its highest level since 2011.

According to preliminary information, the investments exceeded the level of 2019 by 3.6 million euros, as the Ministry of Transport in Potsdam announced in response to a request from the AfD parliamentary group.

However, the goal of 20 million euros a year for cycle path construction formulated in the coalition agreement of 2019 was not achieved.

In 2011 the expenditure for this was still 18.6 million euros.

According to the ministry, a total of around 147 million euros has been spent in Brandenburg since 2010 for the construction of new cycle paths.

Of this, just under 53 million euros came from the state treasury, the rest went to the federal government.

The Brandenburg cycle path network along the federal and state roads is currently around 2000 kilometers long.

The goal of the Kenya coalition of the SPD, CDU and Greens is to increase environmentally friendly mobility in all parts of the country.

According to the coalition agreement, the share of walking, cycling and public transport in all distances covered is to increase from around 40 percent to 60 percent by 2030.

To this end, the state's cycling strategy adopted in 2017 is to be revised by the end of this year.

The aim of making traffic more environmentally friendly is also served by the directive on the promotion of cargo bikes with and without electric drive, which came into force on January 20, 2021.

According to the ministry, 600,000 euros are available for this this year.

The funding applies to municipalities, associations and corporations under public law, but not to private individuals.

The state parliament had already asked the state government to give a cargo bike bonus in the middle of the previous year, but also for private users.

However, private individuals can benefit indirectly from the funding.

According to the directive, the cargo bikes can be made available to private third parties aged 18 and over for free use.

In this case, the funding rate is increased from up to 50 percent of the acquisition costs to up to 80 percent.
