Schönefeld (dpa) - From the operator's point of view, the new capital airport BER will not be full for several years.

An end to the travel restrictions can only be expected when a vaccine against the coronavirus is globally and nationwide available, said airport boss Engelbert Lütke Daldrup on Monday.

"The airport company therefore does not expect air traffic to recover to pre-crisis levels until 2025."

Until then, the state enterprise will continue to need money from its owners, the states of Berlin and Brandenburg and the federal government.

"We as a company will make every effort to work as cheaply as possible by then," assured Lütke Daldrup after a meeting of the supervisory board.

He had set out the prospects for the next few years to the board of directors.

According to this, the pre-crisis level of almost 36 million passengers per year could be reached in the best case in 2023, in the worst case in 2027.

Almost three months after the BER opened, around 7500 passengers use the new airport every day.

A year ago there were ten times as many at the old Tegel and Schönefeld airports.

After 9.1 million passengers in 2020, the company expects 10.7 million this year.

However, the planning uncertainty is great.

For this year, the company had already announced a requirement of around 660 million euros to its shareholders in autumn.

In return, the airport company saves on operations and personnel.

The plan to build another terminal is on hold.

According to information from the “Tagesspiegel”, the remuneration of the management could also be reduced.

Resolutions were not made in the strategy meeting on Monday.

It should be more concrete at the next regular meeting of the supervisory body in mid-March.

Even before the Corona crisis, there was a gap of 375 million euros in the company's financial planning for 2021, mainly because bills for the new airport still have to be paid.

It opened at the end of October after years of delay.

The slump in passenger numbers has increased the financial hardship.
