Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The animal welfare award of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, endowed with 5000 euros, goes to the city pigeon aid Mainz / Wiesbaden this year.

The initiative, founded in 2015, is building so-called pigeon houses, with the help of which the population of birds can be reduced in accordance with animal welfare and the animals can be cared for according to their needs, as Environment Minister Anne Spiegel (Greens) explained at the award ceremony on Monday.

The animals receive food in the pigeon houses, but their reproduction is prevented by the removal of the eggs.

In addition, the members take care of injured and orphaned pigeons.

The second prize, endowed with 1000 euros, goes to animal rights activist Petra Cataldi from Bingen, who, according to Spiegel, “receives calls for help from all over Rheinhessen and the Hunsrück” and does not shy away from “night-time and far-away operations” to save animals.

In addition, she fosters formerly wild domestic cats at home with the bottle and catches runaway dogs with the help of dog traps and wildlife cameras and accompanies the animals to the dog school.
