Schöningen (dpa / lni) - An 87-year-old was killed in a fire in an apartment building in Schöningen (Helmstedt district).
The woman was found in the smoky apartment on Monday and died shortly afterwards, as the Wolfsburg police announced.
The residents of the other three apartments were brought to safety.
To clarify the exact cause of death, the 87-year-old's body will be autopsied in the coming days.
The fire had been noticed that morning by a nurse who wanted to look after the pensioner.
When the woman opened the apartment door, she met thick clouds of intoxication.
The cause of the fire was not yet clear on Monday.
