Hautes-Alpes: A 23-year-old skier dies in an avalanche (Archives) -

A 23-year-old skier from Drôme died in an avalanche in the Grandes Rousses massif, in the town of La Grave (Hautes-Alpes), we learned Monday from mountain rescue.

The victim had left Sunday morning on ski touring and the family, without news since Sunday afternoon, had given the alert.

The body was found Monday at noon, at a place called "La Petite Buffe" at 2,600 meters above sea level, buried under an avalanche nearly 100 meters wide and 150 meters in height, said mountain rescue.

Seven deaths in eight days

The search operations were carried out by rescuers from the CRS des Alpes, based in Briançon as well as a doctor from Samu, helicoptered by a gendarmerie device.

The judicial investigation was entrusted to the CRS des Alpes.

At least seven people have died from avalanches in France in the past eight days, according to an AFP count.
