The conservative politician Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was re-elected as Portugal's head of state with a clear victory.

In the presidential election in the country, which was particularly hard hit by the Corona crisis, the 72-year-old came to a good 61 percent on Sunday, as the national electoral authority CNE in Lisbon announced after more than 99 percent of all votes were counted.

The former law professor and TV journalist got nine percentage points this time compared to his first victory five years ago.

Rebelo de Sousa will remain in office until 2026.

Since he achieved an absolute majority, a round of voting on February 14th is not necessary.

The socialist candidate Ana Gomes landed far behind in second place with a good 12.7 percent.

According to the official information, the head of the right-wing populist party Chega!

(It's enough!), André Ventura, who achieved an unexpectedly good result with around 11.9 percent.
