Hamburg (dpa / lno) - There was a corona outbreak at the aircraft manufacturer Airbus in Hamburg.

A total of 21 employees had tested positive for the corona virus, said Martin Helfrich, press spokesman for the health authority, on a dpa request.

Quarantine was ordered for around 500 employees.

The «Bild» newspaper had previously reported.

The authority could not confirm whether it is a highly contagious mutation of the virus.

"In order to detect a mutation, another examination is necessary, the genome sequencing," said Helfrich.

This investigation was also ordered.

But it takes up to seven days until the result is available.

"We can say something about this at the earliest in the middle of the week," said the spokesman.

Airbus also confirmed the occurrence of several corona infections in a production area at the Hamburg location.

"The corresponding measures such as immediate serial tests and quarantine were initiated immediately in accordance with the processes provided for this purpose, in cooperation with the authorities," said spokesman Daniel Werdung.

The cause of the cases is still being investigated.

With more than 12,000 employees, Airbus is Hamburg's largest industrial employer.
