Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The employers' association Südwestmetall has vehemently spoken out against demands for the abolition of double voting rights for supervisory board chairmen.

Südwestmetall boss Wilfried Porth said in Stuttgart that the participation of employees on the supervisory board is a significant interference with the rights of shareholders.

“It can only be justified by the fact that the chairman of the supervisory board, as the representative of the owners, has double voting rights.

Whoever shakes the double voting right, shakes the participation itself. "

IG Metall state chief Roman Zitzelsberger recently spoke out in favor of limiting the influence of supervisory board chairmen more strongly in votes.

The double vote comes into play if there is a stalemate in votes in a supervisory board with equal representation.

This ensures that the employer can always outvote the employee representatives in case of doubt.

If you actually want participation on an equal footing, that's a contradiction, said Zitzelsberger.

Porth went on to explain that co-determination has proven itself time and again - not only in larger companies - in balancing interests.

“If this balance cannot be achieved, the second voting right is indispensable.

It is a necessary prerequisite to justify extensive participation in larger companies in the first place. "

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Economics said that the rules of co-determination had long been tried and tested in Germany through many crises.

There is no reason to change anything.

“The double voting right for chairmen of the supervisory board should be retained especially now in times of crisis, so as not to make it difficult for companies to make decisions quickly if the supervisory board is made up of equal numbers.

If in doubt, a change could affect our competitiveness. "
