Mainz (AP) - RB Leipzig has suffered a severe setback in the battle for the championship in the Bundesliga.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann's team lost 2: 3 (2: 2) to relegation candidate FSV Mainz 05 at the start of the second half of the season and could be distanced by record champions FC Bayern by seven points on Sunday.

The Saxons suffered the third defeat of the season despite two lead by Tyler Adams (15th minute) and Marcel Halstenberg (30th).

Bayern will play at the bottom of the table, FC Schalke 04, on Sunday (3:30 p.m.).

For Mainz, which showed great morale and previously hidden class in the high-class game, it was the first home win of the season and the debut success under coach Bo Svensson.

Double goalscorers Moussa Niakhaté (24th / 35th minute) and Leandro Barreiro (50th) ensured the surprise coup with their goals in front of the empty stands due to corona.

The Leipzigers did not let themselves be unsettled by the high pressure of the hosts and created their first chances.

Captain Marcel Sabitzer only shot just wide (11th) and hit the crossbar a short time later - Adams was there when the rebound occurred and only had to push in for second in the table.

But Mainz acted courageously - unlike the 2-0 draw against Wolfsburg during the week - and created opportunities for themselves.

The 05er were particularly dangerous when it comes to standards: After a free kick by Danny Latza, Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi ricocheted off, Niakhaté dusted off from a very short distance to equalize.

It was the Mainz team's first home goal after a 400-minute lull.

The game offered action, speed, goal area scenes - and a lot more fighting at eye level than Leipzig could have liked with the clear outsider.

The Spaniard Dani Olmo was blocked at the end of the six-yard area, only the following corner then brought the desired success: National player Halstenberg was free in the middle and brought RB again in the lead, but this did not last long the second time.

Because after a corner from Mainz, Niakhaté was right again and converted the head-extended cross to 2-2.

In the first 15 missions of the season, the Frenchman hadn't scored at all, now twice.

The ambitious Nagelsmann was clearly frustrated by the doubly wasted leadership.

When Olmo was prosecuted for a foul, the 33-year-old had enough: "We're on the ball first. What kind of shit is he whistling?" He shouted at the fourth official.

Mainz did not have the weakest first half of the Bundesliga history.

After the change, Frankfurt's loan from Danny da Costa ignited the turbo in his first outing for Mainz and put his last strength in the middle, where Barreiro hit the short corner to make it 3-2.

Leipzig ran now and had several top chances, but it was no longer enough to equalize despite six minutes of added time.
