The Jönköping County region has 7,000 - 8,000 blood donors, but there could be significantly more.

During the corona pandemic, blood centers have been forced to say no to new donors.

- When the spread of infection increased, we decided to pause our new registrations.

Now it is most important to take care of the blood donors we have, says Madelaine Andersson, area manager of the Blood Center.

More blood may be needed

On average, 1,000 bags of blood are consumed per month in healthcare in the Jönköping County Region, and at the moment it is looking good in the warehouses.

But that can change quickly and the region is also assisting other areas with blood.

Most blood is given to patients with chronic diseases and cancer.

These groups have received care even during the pandemic, but when the operating queues will eventually begin to shorten, there may be a shortage of blood, says Madelaine Andersson.

- Then we may have to increase our stock a little, but we will try to be prepared for that.
