Erfurt (dpa / th) - According to the State Statistical Office, there was a significantly increased mortality rate in Thuringia at the end of the Corona year 2020.

In December alone, the number of people who died was 3577, around 40 percent above the average for 2016 to 2019, the state office announced on Friday in Erfurt.

Reasons for this development were not given.

Thuringia is severely affected by the pandemic with almost 1900 corona deaths so far.

In the statistics of the state office there are particularly many deaths in the over 80 age group.

According to preliminary evaluations, 17,684 people from this age group died in the entire year, which corresponds to an increase of 1734 cases or 10.9 percent.

With the exception of February and March, more people from this age group died in all months of the past year than in previous years.

At the end of the year in particular, the increased mortality rate among the elderly became particularly clear: In December, 852 people from the over 80 age group died, which is almost 60 percent more people than the average in previous years.
