Bad Dürkheim (dpa / lrs) - After the recovery of three bodies from a burned-out car in Bad Dürkheim, Palatinate, investigators found the use of a fire accelerator in the wrecked car.

The Frankenthal public prosecutor announced this on Friday when asked.

An expert examined the vehicle in which a man and two children were found dead on Tuesday.

During the autopsy, there were no indications of violence, it said.

"The most likely cause of death in all three people was carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of the fire."

Why the vehicle burned and why the three people did not leave the car is the subject of further investigations, it said.

The expert ruled out a technical defect in the vehicle or an accident.

The toxicological investigation - i.e. the search for whether substances such as narcotics can be detected in the body - is also ongoing.

Here, as with the identification, results can be expected next week at the earliest.

The dead children are a girl and a boy.
