The Greens parliamentary group demands a government statement from Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).

"We expect the Chancellor to declare herself about the corona pandemic in the next week of the session in parliament," said First Parliamentary Managing Director Britta Haßelmann of the German Press Agency.

At the beginning of the week, the Greens had resisted a special session of the Bundestag.

The FDP had requested in a letter to the parliamentary group leaders of the CDU / CSU, SPD, Greens and Left.

"According to our view of the state, the Chancellor should inform parliament about a changed pandemic situation and new restrictions on fundamental rights," wrote party leader Christian Lindner and parliamentary managing director Marco Buschmann.

Haßelmann rejected the proposal at the beginning of the week, arguing that the health committee would meet this week anyway.

That must be enough.

A special session did not take place because, besides the FDP, only the left-wing parliamentary group considered the FDP initiative to be justified.

According to the rules of procedure of the Bundestag, a special session would only have to be called if at least one third of the members of the parliament were in favor.

However, the FDP and left-wing parliamentary group together only have 149 MPs.

Government declaration planned - but without Merkel

There should actually be a government statement next Thursday at 9 a.m., but Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) should comment on the annual economic report.

"It cannot be that she sends Peter Altmaier in the government statement while the Chancellor herself goes to the federal press conference," said Haßelmann.

Merkel asked questions primarily about the government's corona policy at the federal press conference on Thursday, in front of capital journalists.

"We expect Angela Merkel to explain her policy to the MPs and have therefore asked the Chancellor to issue a government statement," said Haßelmann.
