Mönchengladbach (Germany) (AFP)

Six goals, braces from Haaland and Elvedi, and a fight of great intensity: Mönchengladbach won 4-2 Friday against Dortmund a superb duel of Borussia, and regains his footing in the top-4 qualifier for the Champions League .

Marcus Thuram, who was making his comeback after five games suspended for spitting on an opponent, killed the game in the 78th minute by scoring his team's fourth goal.

Bayern (39 pts), who play Sunday against the red lantern Schalke (3:30 p.m.), is still in the lead with four lengths ahead of Leipzig (35 pts) and seven over Leverkusen (32 pts).

Mönchengladbach glued to 31 pts, and Dortmund slipped into fifth position with 29 pts.

The Ruhr side have taken just one point from their last three games, despite Lucien Favre being sacked and being replaced by Edin Terzic in December.

His title hopes gone, the "yellow" Borussia knows that he will now have to fight hard if he wants to play the Champions League again next season.

- Haaland doubles again -

After the magnificent Leverkusen-Dortmund (2-1) last week, it is therefore another Bundesliga shock that has kept all its promises.

The match started with a thunderclap.

After 44 seconds of play, Florian Neuhaus scored for Mönchengladbach.

The goal was disallowed for a previous foul, but the tone was set: the two teams, who both had a lot to lose this Friday night, were there to fight.

The first ten minutes saw the "Colts" surge into the area of Dortmund.

The reward came very quickly, by the Swiss international Nico Elvedi, who scored with a header at the resumption of a deep free kick (1-0, 10th).

At that moment, the Dortmund supporters could tremble.

Their team had barely crossed the halfway line, and seemed set on having a terrible night.

This was counting without the individual class of the 20-year-old stars of the Ruhr: two exceptional services from the young Englishman Jadon Sancho in the heart of the defense, and two very high-class goals from the Norwegian prodigy Erling Haaland (goalkeeper lob in an angle impossible, then pivot shot "à la Gerd Müller") would initially reverse the match (2-1, 22nd and 28th).

Haaland now has 14 Bundesliga goals this season, scored in 13 appearances.

- Blow for blow -

But it was said that the Borussia would surrender blow for blow.

Central defender Elvedi scored his second goal in stride, picking up from close range a ball repelled by Bürki on a direct free kick (2-2, 32nd).

"We saw a very good game from both teams," said Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, "it was not all bad on our part, but we are taking goals again from set pieces, it is a big problem with us ".

After the break, Mönchengladbach started off stronger again, and Algerian international Ramy Bensebaini handed his team in front of another sumptuous goal, a shot coiled into the box at a very tight angle from the left (3-2, 49th).

Haaland (64th), then Guerreiro (75th) for Dortmund, tried to deceive Yann Sommer, but it was Marcus Thuram, the French neo-international, who ended the discussions by beating Emre Can in an aerial duel on a corner, again a set piece, to bring the lead to 4-2 (78th).
