Munich (dpa / lby) - The measures to combat the corona pandemic also keep other infectious diseases in check.

Hygiene concepts, distance rules, contact restrictions and home office have also contained the transmission of other pathogens, explained the head of DAK Bayern, Sophie Schwab.

There is one exception, however: Tick-borne meningitis (TBE), which is transmitted by ticks, experienced an increase of 44 percent in Bavaria last year.

"Due to the restrictions, walks, sports and outdoor exercise were popular alternatives for many people," explained Schwab.

For other notifiable infectious diseases and pathogens, however, the trend was clearly positive: the number of norovirus infections fell from around 15,400 in 2019 to just under 6,000 in 2020, according to an analysis of the data from the Robert Koch Institute by the health insurance company.

In the case of chickenpox, the number halved from 5200 to 2600. Tuberculosis, salmonella and the hantavirus also decreased significantly in the Free State.

In the case of measles, the number fell by almost two thirds from 88 to 30 within a year.

However: "In addition to the contact restrictions and distance rules, the measles protection law, which has been in force since March 1, 2020, has certainly contributed to the positive development of measles," explained Schwab.

Among other things, this provides for mandatory vaccination for students and school staff.

The flu is a special case, in which the Bavarian doctors recorded an increase of 17 percent last year - from 46,900 to 55,100 cases.

This was probably due to the fact that the high point of the flu season was already before the first lockdown in spring and the spread was not influenced by the anti-corona measures.
