The office of Governor General is largely formal, but it plays an important role in the functioning of Canadian political institutions.

Especially at a time when

Justin Trudeau is

leading a minority government.

When in 2017 the Canadian Prime Minister announces that Julie Payette will become the new Governor General, that is to say the representative of the Queen of England in Canada, the opposition applauds.

The glory of this former astronaut, who took part in missions on the international space station, gives luster to the government.

His appointment also has the merit of giving a facelift to a protocol function that many consider outdated.

But three years later, nothing is going well.

Testimonies are piling up on the climate of terror that the Governor General has on her staff.

Harassment, incessant screams, not to mention his huge expenses to renovate his offices.

Julie Payette is no longer a model employee.

She is also reluctant to sign laws, yet an important part of her job.

His resignation, after the revelation of his escapades, does not surprise anyone.

But she asks a lot of questions about the lack of rigor that preceded her appointment.

His anger and his disastrous personnel management in his previous functions were not a state secret.
