Many consumers feel cheated when they discover that the puff pastry they bought does not contain butter.

It shows the fake nominations Genuine goods received.

Butter-free puff pastry accounted for 21 of 184 nominations for this year's anti-prize and Pop Bakery's dough received the most votes.

- Dough that does not contain butter should be called something else, says Björn Bernhardson, operations manager at Äkta vara.

Allowed in Sweden

Through an exception from EU rules, it is permitted to call puff pastry puff pastry in Sweden, even if it does not contain butter.

After a review among the EU countries, it was established that we have no other name for the product than puff pastry and therefore it may be called that.

In English, on the other hand, it is called

puff pastry

 (roughly puff pastry), in French

pâte feuilletée

/ and in German

blätterteig

 (puff pastry).

- On the list of products that may have butter in the name, for example peanut butter, it is only the puff pastry that you actually expect to contain real butter.

This is a clear signal that the current exceptions should be removed, says Björn Bernhardson.

Common "scam"

It is not uncommon for puff pastry not to contain butter.

Both Coop, Ica, Findus, Lantgården and Eldorado sell puff pastry made from vegetable oils.

The advantages for producers are that vegetable oils are cheaper to buy and have a longer shelf life.

They are also vegan and an option for milk allergy sufferers.

In many cases, however, palm oil is one of the fatty ingredients, which despite the fact that it is now usually RSPO-labeled (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) still contributes to the devastation of rainforests, according to the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation.

And "The taste is in the butter!", Echoes the shouts from consumers (who are not vegans).

Launches real puff pastry

Pop bakery writes that from mid-March, the recipe will be changed to contain real butter, free of margarine, palm oil and additives.

Something that has upset a lot of vegans and allergy sufferers, according to the comments on social media.

Genuine goods believe in locally produced ingredients and are mainly about not using misleading marketing.

- We genuinely work for genuine food as you know it, as you would cook it yourself.

No one would think of ordering long-distance palm oil for home baking, says Björn Bernhardson.
