Bernie Sanders sitting next to Forrest Gump, Bernie Sanders sitting at the table in the painting Jesus' Last Supper and Bernie Sanders sitting in the Star Wars ship.

Twitter is flooded with pictures where he has been cut out and placed in completely different contexts.

And the memes have spread from the United States to Sweden.

But what is it that makes it so fun?

- This type of humor is partly about contrasts and partly about summarizing references we know by putting them together in unexpected ways, says journalist Jack Werner who himself posted memes during the day, and continues:

- This was one of the USA's biggest political events, which is huge and solemn.

That, together with his choice of clothes and the trumped posture, becomes a grateful contrast.

Technology student behind viral site

In addition, the site Put Bernie Everywhere has been spread and used by users all over the world.

There, anyone can go in and paste in the address and shortly afterwards Bernie shows up, which has given rise to even more memes.

The creator of the site is technology student Nich Sawhney from New York, who says that it was intended as a joke.

He says he is shocked by the impact it has had.

- I had an hour to kill and thought it would be fun!

My friends and I flipped through crazy pictures of Bernie sitting in our favorite places and I thought it would be a fun thing to do.

It has been completely crazy to try to keep up with all the traffic to the site, he says to SVT News.
