Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Elementary schools in Baden-Württemberg could soon be equipped millions of times with special masks from the Ministry of Health.

In a letter to the Minister of Education, Susanne Eisenmann (CDU), which is available to the dpa, Minister of Health Manne Lucha (Greens) writes that his ministry has given the Ministry of Education a further 5 million surgical masks and 1.8 million KN95 protective masks for the Ministry of Education “as recently requested” can provide a requirement of three months.

"The latter have currently been quality-checked by Dekra GmbH and are unrestricted for the intended use in elementary schools," the letter continues.

At the end of last year, the Association of Philologists suspected that the Ministry of Health might have delivered masks of poor quality to schools and requested tests of the KN95 masks.

Lucha had recently stated - also in a letter to Eisenmann - that Dekra had checked random samples of the KN95 masks and, with one exception, found a filtration performance of 99 percent.

The measurements of the Philologists Association had previously shown a filtration performance of 85 percent.
