Berlin (dpa) - Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to talk to the new US government about the controversial Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2.

"Then we have to talk about which economic relations in the gas sector with Russia are acceptable and which are not," said the CDU politician on Thursday in Berlin.

She pointed out that the US also had trade relations with Russia in the oil sector.

"That means we have to put everything on the table."

One had to talk about whether one no longer wanted to trade with Russia in the gas sector or what dependency was tolerable.

However, her basic attitude towards Nord Stream 2 has "not yet changed to the point where I say the project should not exist," stressed Merkel.

Merkel again criticized the US sanctions imposed on Nord Stream 2.

The USA accuses Germany of making Europe, with the almost completed pipeline between Russia and Germany, too dependent on Russian energy supplies.

Proponents of the pipeline, on the other hand, accuse the US of only wanting to sell their liquid gas better in Europe.
