Berlin (dpa) - Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner has defended the farmers against criticism from environmental and animal rights activists.

Agriculture is in a phase of massive upheaval, said the CDU politician on Thursday.

"But it's never enough," said Klöckner, criticizing the debate.

Critics would not recognize the achievements of the farmers, for example that they use less pesticides.

Certain groups followed in the debate the "wish for a whole world".

The discussion is often shaped by an urban perspective.

Animal and environmental protection should be combined with economy, this is a social question, said Klöckner at the online edition of the agricultural fair Green Week.

Food security is not a matter of course.

"If I want regional food, I also have to have regional farmers."

She is very concerned about the concentration in the grocery trade.

85 percent of the market power lies with four companies.

Before the federal election in September, Klöckner attacked the Greens and the SPD.

The Greens wanted to go into the election campaign with enemy images, they had a different understanding of sustainability than the Union.

This also applies to Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze (SPD).

You only see the ecology, but not the economy.
