Practical winter jacket and eye-catching knitted gloves: Somehow Bernie Sanders did not want to fit into the setting of the inauguration of US President Joe Biden.

On Wednesday, the Vermont senator caused a lot of talk with his outfit choice - and a small Internet hit.

The media described the choice of clothes - paired with Sanders' sitting posture with arms crossed - as "grumpy chic" (lousy style).

After a very short time, countless photo montages were circulating on Twitter, showing Sanders in all possible - and impossible - situations.

Some commented maliciously that the 79-year-old looked as if he was standing in line at the post office or as if he had just stopped at the Biden swearing-in on the way to the pharmacy.

The senator's wife, Jane O'Meara Sanders, responded with humor on Twitter: "Vermont jacket, Vermont gloves, Vermont common sense."

It is not the first time that Sanders has caused a stir in this way.

The knitted gloves achieved fame about a year ago at an appearance by the politician, who at the time was still running as a candidate in the Democratic primary against eventual winner Joe Biden.

Made from recycled sweaters and old plastic bottles, as the "Los Angeles Times" reports, the hand warmers even managed to get their own Twitter account.

Under the title @BerniesMittens (Bernies Mittens), the most beautiful appearances of the gloves can be admired there to this day.
