Cologne (dpa / lnw) - A police escort that would have honored a head of state has consequences for a number of Cologne police officers.

The officers are said to have thought of a special farewell for a colleague on his retirement: 17 police motorcycles, a water cannon and a special vehicle of the special units had driven with flashing lights and sirens to the district of Euskirchen to please the long-serving police officer at his place of residence, like the police announced on Thursday.

But the joy is now clouded, because Cologne's police chief Uwe Jacob ordered internal investigations.

“I understand that popular employees are given a dignified farewell after more than 40 years of service.

Such actions can, however, have consequences for each individual, but also for the authorities, ”said Jacob.

The matter came to light because the head of a neighboring daycare center had asked the police in Euskirchen what the enormous and loud police presence was all about.

In the meantime, they have apologized to the daycare manager and the district administrator of the Euskirchen district for the action and “put the cards on the table”.

The Ministry of the Interior had also been informed about the high-profile exit.

The investigation is likely to involve at least around 20 officers.

According to initial findings, there were no violations of the Corona Protection Ordinance when saying goodbye.
