The corona pandemic has put undertakers and crematoriums in North Rhine-Westphalia under pressure with persistently high death rates in December and January.

Individual crematoria in North Rhine-Westphalia are working on the border, announced the Federal Working Group of German Crematoria.

But so far the capacities have been sufficient, although the number of deaths infected with Covid-19 roughly doubled from December to January, the federal association announced.

That was the result of a survey among members.

Crematoria are in exchange nationwide and support each other in order to compensate for peak loads.

The working group could not give absolute figures on the cremations in NRW.

According to her, there are around 20 crematoria nationwide.

Almost 70 percent of those who died in North Rhine-Westphalia let themselves be cremated.
