Nonnweiler (dpa / lrs) - A 14-year-old boy was seriously injured in the explosion of a heating boiler in a single-family house in Nonnweiler (St. Wendel district).

He suffered severe burns on his face and upper body from steam and hot water on Wednesday evening and was taken to a hospital, the police said on Thursday.

The boy was home alone with his 16 and 13 year old siblings.

When it got cold in the apartment in the evening, the 14-year-old went into the cellar.

The police believe that he was trying to fire an old heater with wood.

Their outflowing water pipes were therefore closed and the heated water could not escape.

The boiler exploded due to the overpressure.

The boy was not life-threateningly injured, he and his siblings could have escaped to the neighboring property.

The amount of damage to property was initially unknown.
