Passau (dpa) - Bavaria's border police are to be increased to more than 1000 employees by 2025.

This was announced by Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) in Passau on Thursday.

According to this, 720 border police officers are currently on duty.

In 2020, they processed around 42,800 cases (2019: 32,500) and registered a good 13,300 wanted hits (2019: 15,700).

The border police, in coordination with the federal police, are supposed to provide additional security by means of veil searches near the border and additional controls directly at the border.

Since July 2018, the officials have recorded around 35,000 successful searches, discovered vehicles that were reported stolen or arrested people wanted with an arrest warrant, said Herrmann.

Two and a half years after the introduction of the border police in the Free State, there is also a change in leadership.

Manager Alois Mannichl will retire at the end of January after 47 years of service.

Mannichl's deputy, Annette Lauer, will be his successor.
