Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - The man who died in a fire in Frankfurt on Wednesday was the 42-year-old tenant of the apartment.

That was the autopsy of the dead, said a police spokesman on Thursday.

Accordingly, the 42-year-old died of the direct consequences of the fire, a violent crime, the investigators ruled out after the forensic medical examination.

How the fire in the 150 square meter apartment in posh Westend came about, however, was still unclear.

The fire broke out early Wednesday morning on the fourth floor of the apartment building.

The police estimated the damage to be several hundred thousand euros.

The fire department put it at more than a million.

Rescue workers found the body after the extinguishing work was completed.
