Antonov said that the administration of former US President Donald Trump put forward unacceptable conditions for the extension of the treaty and this brought bilateral consultations on START to a dead end.

He expressed the hope that the current US administration will proceed from more sound and realistic principles.

“Russia is open to a substantive dialogue on the extension of the START Treaty.

There are still chances to reach an appropriate agreement before the expiration of the agreement on February 5, 2021, ”the ambassador said.

Antonov added that the Russian side expects constructive proposals from Washington.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia is in favor of extending the START Treaty.
