Anklam (dpa / mv) - Before his 70th birthday, the long-time director of the Vorpommerschen Landesbühne, Wolfgang Bordel, spoke out in favor of a more political theater in the country.

One must do justice to socio-critical and political issues, he told the German press agency.

"There is tragedy in every laugh, and that has to be shown."

Bordel, who will turn 70 on Thursday, was director of the Vorpommern Landesbühne Anklam (Vorpommern-Greifswald) from 1983 to 2019.

He saved the theater in the small town, which today has almost 13,800 inhabitants, after the fall of the Wall, especially through the summer performances on Usedom and with open airs.

These include the Vineta Festival in Zinnowitz.

When the theater in Anklam was about to end in 1990, they rolled up their sleeves, said Bordel.

He thanked his colleagues in the theater.

"That we did this together, that the Vorpommerschen Landesbühne Anklam still exists, that is actually the best thing about it."

The viewers who came and stayed loyal are also “very, very important”.

Last year Bordel was awarded the culture prize of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The Vorpommerschen Landesbühne is identity-creating for all of Vorpommern, said Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD).

Even today, Bordel trains young actors in the theater academy he founded in Zinnowitz.

With a view to the current situation during the corona pandemic, he expressed his birthday wish: "It would be nice if we could finally start playing again - together we can advance the theater."
