Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The planned opening of elementary schools and daycare centers from February is not feasible in the opinion of the Education and Science Union (GEW) in view of the lack of protective masks and a lack of staff.

As long as there were still no security measures, such a step for daycare centers and schools from February 1 in the current Corona situation would be utopian, said GEW state chairwoman Monika Stein on Wednesday in Freiburg.

"The safety of children, young people and the educational professionals in daycare centers and schools must always be our top priority."

Everyone wanted to be able to return to the daycare centers and classrooms.

"If that is not possible due to the number of infections or the risk of new virus variants, unfortunately daycare centers and schools have to remain closed," said Stein.

Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann announced on Tuesday evening that elementary schools and daycare centers in the state would probably be gradually reopened from February 1st.

He is striving to carefully reopen daycare centers and elementary schools “if the infection situation allows,” said the Green politician after the federal-state meeting on the corona crisis.

The final decision will be made in the coming week.
