Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In local transport and in shops, people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will have to wear simple surgical masks or FFP2 masks in the future.

This is to prevent infections with the new, much more contagious mutation of the corona virus, said Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) on Tuesday evening after the state heads of government with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).

It doesn't have to be FFP-2 masks, she stressed.

The simple surgical masks are much safer than everyday masks and are easy to buy, even for a fair unit price.

"We still advise that wherever possible, FFP2 masks should also be worn, so the better ones," Schwesig continued. These offer maximum protection and have already been distributed to high-risk patients, especially the elderly. "We ourselves have 2.6 million of these in the warehouse and want to distribute these FFP2 masks to the population and see that we can equip certain areas better with another order." How the distribution should take place will be discussed at the MV summit on Friday, added a government spokesman.
