Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - During the corona pandemic, significantly fewer other infectious diseases such as measles or flu occurred in Baden-Württemberg.

According to information from DAK-Gesundheit on Wednesday, around 45,000 cases of infectious diseases were reported in the southwest in 2020.

In the previous year it was 55,000. This corresponds to a decrease of 18 percent.

Covid-19 diseases were not included in the statistics.

The health insurance company refers to previously unpublished figures from the Robert Koch Institute.

Notifiable diseases and pathogens were taken into account for the analysis.

There has been a particularly sharp decline in the number of chickenpox and noroviruses in the country.

Dangerous infections such as dengue fever, which had previously affected return travelers, also decreased significantly.

In the current flu season, 42 cases have been confirmed in the laboratory since October - significantly fewer than in previous years.

"The decline in infectious diseases shows that the hygiene measures to contain the corona pandemic also partially prevent the transmission of other dangerous diseases," says Siegfried Euerle, head of the DAK Health in Baden-Württemberg.

School and daycare closings as well as work in the home office would have prevented transmissions.
