January 20, 2021 The Rome Prosecutor's Office asked for the indictment of the four members of the Egyptian secret services accused of the kidnapping, torture and murder of Giulio Regeni, the Italian researcher found lifeless in Egypt in February 2016.

The prosecutor Michele Prestipino and prosecutor Sergio Colaiocco signed the request for indictment contesting, for various reasons, the multiple kidnapping, and the concurrence in personal injury (the crime of torture was introduced only in 2017) and in murder.

For a fifth agent, the prosecutors had already requested the dismissal

. General Tariq Sabir, Colonels Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim and Uhsam Helmi, and Major Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif are at risk of trial.

For major Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif, in addition to the

kidnapping

, the personal injuries and murder of the Friulian researcher are also disputed.

Regeni, according to the prosecutor, died of acute respiratory failure precisely because of the massive traumatic injuries caused by Sharif's beating.

The dismissal, on the other hand, was requested by the officer Mahmoud Najem, against whom "no sufficient evidence has been found, at present, to support the accusation in court".

The role of Egyptian intelligence in this affair had been meticulously reconstructed by the carabinieri del Ros and the SCO policemen.

On 10 December, the prosecutor had closed the investigation, notifying the deed to the Italian lawyers, since the election of the suspects' domicile was never received by the Cairo authorities.

And since there were no "new facts" after notification of the notice of conclusion of the investigation, the magistrates filed the request for trial in the offices of the GUP.
