Berlin (AP) - After a fire in a nursing home in Berlin-Kladow with one dead and 14 injured, the cause of the fire remains unclear.

The identity of the death victim has not yet been determined either.

"The body was completely charred," said a fire department spokesman.

According to the police, the facility was initially evacuated after the fire on Tuesday evening - about 15 people affected were looked after by an emergency chaplain after the shock.

Around 140 rescue workers were on duty.

A resident's room on the first floor was completely burned out, a spokesman said.

Thick smoke made it difficult for the old and mobility-impaired residents to get out of the building.

The nurses had behaved well and "very courageously" helped, it said.

According to the fire department, some residents were infected with the corona virus.

That was an additional challenge, but it is part of the everyday life of the helpers.

The care facility is located in a former barracks area in the Spandau district on the western outskirts of Berlin.

According to its website, the home has 148 places, most of them in single rooms.
