Mannheim (dpa / lsw) - During its general renovation from 2022 or 2023, the Mannheim National Theater can at least partially move to the Pfalzbau in neighboring Ludwigshafen.

Mannheim's cultural mayor Michael Grötsch told the “Mannheimer Morgen” (Wednesday) that they had “largely agreed so that a contract can be hoped for as soon as possible”.

Ludwigshafen promised the National Theater a maximum of 117 days per year.

However, he would like the Pfalzbau to "allow further possible uses".

The city is also currently looking into building another permanent venue on an area near the Technoseum.

A lightweight building made of steel and aluminum is planned.

According to Grötsch, a decision should be made by the summer break.

The Mannheim National Theater is to be refurbished because the operating license for the theater expires at the end of 2022 due to fire protection deficiencies.

According to “Mannheimer Morgen”, the city wants to try to have it extended if necessary.

According to the theater management, the architectural office in charge is currently assuming a construction period of at least four years.

The 63-year-old National Theater is the largest municipal four-division theater in Europe.

Mannheim is a special theater location, among other things because the drama "The Robbers" by Friedrich Schiller was premiered there in 1782.
