 A 24-year-old Italian foreign fighter in Syria was arrested after police investigations. The accusation for him is association with the purpose of terrorism, including international, enlistment, apology for terrorism and incitement to commit crimes with these purposes. The operation is the result of a complex investigation, coordinated by the prosecutor of L'Aquila, aimed at tracing the fighter, recipient of the precautionary measure issued in 2017 by the Gip of the Abruzzo capital and subsequently extended internationally. The young man, resident in Switzerland from birth, had undertaken when he was still a minor a path of conversion to Islam that led him to complete radicalization. The profound sharing of jihadist ideals prompted him, in 2014, to leave for the Syrian-Iraqi quadrant to join the Qaedist formation Jabath Fatah al-Sham together with his wife, a Turkish citizen born in Germany, from whom he subsequently had three sons. The targeted technical-IT activities carried out by the Digos of Pescara and by specialized personnel of the Service for the Fight against Extremism and External Terrorism of the DCPP-Ucigos, started in 2015, allowed to document the actual activism of the Italian citizen in the ranks terrorist groups affiliated with Al Qaeda in the war territories of the Syrian-Iraqi quadrant, as well as its intense proselytizing activity, combat training and subsequent use in military activities. Also thanks to the results obtained in the international letters rogatory, it was possible to locate the foreign fighter and his family in the Syrian area of ​​Idlib and to document his willingness to surrender himself to the Italian authorities. In light of these developments, the Police Service for the Fight against Extremism and External Terrorism has activated the diplomatic channels and police cooperation that have been reflected in the full collaboration of the Turkish authorities, making it possible to combine judicial requests with humanitarian needs. Anti-terrorism officials of the State Police, of the External Information and Security Agency (Aise) and of the Digos of Pescara went to Hatay (Turkey) to take over the compatriot who, having arrived in Italy, was notified of the order of precautionary custody in prison, while the wife and children of the foreign fighter, according to the wishes of the spouses, remained in Turkey.
