Halle (AP) - The handball women of the SV Union Halle-Neustadt have suffered a bitter setback in the fight to stay in the league.

The promoted team lost the catch-up game against the penultimate 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Wednesday with 22:28 (10:15).

After the seventh game in a row without a win, the protégés of coach Jan-Henning Himborn still have only four points ahead of the first direct relegation place.

Elisa Burkholder (6), Denise Großheim and Natalie Adeberg (5 each) had the largest share in the success of the team from Rhineland-Palatinate.

Sophie Lütke (7/1) and Helena Mikkelsen (6/3) scored the most goals for Halle.

The indoor athletes slept through the start phase and, primarily due to their high error rate in the attack, were behind with 5:10 after 17 minutes.

Only after the change of sides did the newcomer hope for a moment, who fought his way up to 18:19 (42nd).

But the Mainz team kept their nerve and were back in front with 22:18 just five minutes later.
