The farm, which is located in Kalmar County, is fenced off with a radius of three kilometers.

Inside the barrier, a great deal of work is now being done to prevent the highly contagious bird flu from spreading.

Half a million will be killed

According to the Swedish Board of Agriculture, this is a very large number of chickens that must now be killed.

- Probably 500,000 birds are to be killed, some have already been killed, says Katharina Gielen who is deputy head of the animal department at the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

The Armed Forces convened

To cope with the job, the Swedish Board of Agriculture has turned to the Armed Forces.

30 soldiers from the Home Guard in the southern region are on site.

- The Home Guard has received a question from the Swedish Board of Agriculture about support.

The concrete task is to kill and put them in containers, says Jan Bohman, communications manager in the southern military region to SVT.

The work of killing the hens is expected to continue until next week.

Not dangerous for humans

The bird flu is highly contagious between birds and is spread through infected wild birds or birds that move between different herds.

The virus is not dangerous to humans, but can be devastating to get into bird herds.

The case in Kalmar County is the fourth since the turn of the year and the first outside Skåne.

SVT has sought comment from the farm in question, which refers all questions to the Swedish Board of Agriculture.
