Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - More people in Baden-Württemberg are hoping for a donor organ.

As the state representative of the Techniker Krankenkasse announced on Wednesday, 1,071 people in the southwest were on the waiting list for an organ transplant at the beginning of the year.

That is 38 more than in January 2020. Most of the patients (802) need a new kidney.

In 2020, hospitals in Baden-Württemberg performed 450 organ transplants.

That is almost 12 percent less than last year.

69 of the transplants were based on living donations.

In Baden-Württemberg, the corona pandemic was not the main reason for the decline in transplants, said a spokeswoman for Techniker-Krankenkasse on Wednesday. The health insurance refers to Eurotransplant figures. The foundation, based in the Netherlands, is responsible for the allocation of donor organs in eight European countries.
