Chechnya: jihadist leader linked to attacks in Russia killed

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov welcomed the death of one of the IS leaders in the Russian Caucasus.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen leader, announced on Wednesday the death of the man who was considered one of the heads of the organization of the Islamic State in the Caucasus.

Aged 46, Aslan Bioutoukaïev was wanted by Russia but also by the United States, which had placed him on their list of "international terrorists".

It was through a triumphant statement published on his Telegram channel that Ramzan Kadyrov made public the death of Aslan Bioutoukaïev.

The insurrection of bandits in our territory is completely over, 

" welcomes the Chechen leader, according to whom five other terrorists were killed in the operation.

Aslan Bioutoukaïev's name was on the American list of "international terrorists".

He was considered by the United States to be the head of the Islamic State organization in the Russian Caucasus.

After the end of the war in Chechnya and the crushing of armed movements in the region in the 2000s, the most radical fringe of the rebellion turned towards international jihadism, providing the organization of the Islamic State with many fighters left to fight in Syria and Iraq.

Aslan Bioutoukaïev was wanted in Russia for the organization of several terrorist attacks.

He was particularly suspected of being at the origin of a particularly deadly attack: the one which had caused the death of 35 people in 2011 in the Moscow airport of

The announcement of his death was greeted in Moscow by Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman.
