Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berlin Senate met on Wednesday for deliberations on how to proceed with the corona pandemic.

It is primarily about the extension of the lockdown until February 14th, on which the federal and state governments agreed on Tuesday evening in a switch with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).

It is expected that the Senate will now implement this legally.

To do this, the state's Infection Protection Ordinance must be updated.

This also applies to the stricter mask requirement on buses and trains and when shopping.

In future, according to the federal-state resolution, wearing FFP2, KN95 or surgical masks will be mandatory there.

These should offer more protection.

Everyday masks made of fabric or other coverings of the mouth and nose are then no longer allowed.

The background to the federal-state decision is the persistently high number of infections and concerns about mutations in the coronavirus.

This means that restaurants, cinemas and theaters, leisure activities and retail are closed.

Exceptions still apply, for example, to supermarkets, drugstores or pharmacies.

Schools and daycare centers should also remain as largely as possible.
