Wiesbaden (dpa) - In Germany, more apples were harvested last year.

At 1.02 million tons, the amount was around three percent above the previous year's figure of 991,500 tons, as the Federal Statistical Office announced in Wiesbaden on Wednesday.

This means that more than 12 kilograms of apples per capita were harvested across Germany in 2020.

However, the record year 2018 remained unmatched.

Baden-Württemberg had the largest share of the apple harvest last year with 403,200 tons (39 percent) and Lower Saxony with 279,700 tons (27 percent).

The two largest German apple-growing regions, Altes Land, which extends across Lower Saxony and Hamburg, and the Lake Constance region are located there.

While the harvest in Baden-Württemberg grew slightly by one percent, it rose by almost six percent in Lower Saxony, according to statisticians.

Apples are by far the most harvested tree fruit in Germany, ahead of pears and sweet cherries.

Nationwide, the area under cultivation has increased by more than 2,000 hectares to 33,900 hectares since 2010.

More than 70 percent of the apple harvest was sold as dessert fruit.
