On day one in office, US President-elect Joe Biden plans to propose comprehensive immigration reform.

The estimated eleven million people living in the United States without legal status should be offered an eight-year path to citizenship, as the AP news agency learned on Monday.

With the template, Biden should then not only work on an election campaign promise that is important to Latinos and other voters with a migration background.

The draft would also mean a departure from President Donald Trump's tough immigration policy with mass deportations.

The draft is expected to be hundreds of pages long and will be introduced after Biden's swearing-in on Wednesday, as an AP person familiar with the bill described.

Specifically, people living in the USA without legal status are to be given a path of five years to obtain a residence permit or a green card.

Should those affected then seek citizenship, it will take another three years.

There should be a faster process for the so-called Dreamer, among other things;

young adults who came to the United States as undocumented children.

In the Democratic primary campaign, Biden said that immigration would be one of his priorities.

His allies, and even some Republicans, have cited immigration policy as a possible subject the two parties could agree on under the new administration.

Biden is expected to reverse some of Trump's orders, including the entry ban for visitors from several predominantly Muslim countries.
