Düsseldorf (dpa) - The Düsseldorf energy group Uniper is still convinced of the completion of the project despite the penalty imposed by the US government on a company involved in Nord Stream 2.

"We stand by Nord Stream 2 and are not affected by sanctions," said a company spokesman on Tuesday.

Uniper is still convinced “that the pipeline will be completed”.

The company is involved in financing the gas pipeline with 950 million euros.

Uniper is monitoring developments in the USA very closely and is in contact with all the necessary bodies, the spokesman continued.

"It gives us particular hope that there is a clearly increased willingness in the USA to hear the arguments of the Europeans."

That is why Uniper have the hope that the transatlantic relationship under the new US President Joe Biden will become a real partnership again.

On the basis of the sanctions laws against Nord Stream 2, the outgoing US government has for the first time punished a company for participating in the construction of the German-Russian gas pipeline.

The US State Department announced on Tuesday that the Russian company KVT-RUS was affected.

Their laying ship "Fortuna" is classified as "blocked property".
